André Béteille

On 3rd February 2026, renowned sociologist and writer André Béteille passed away at his residence in New Delhi. He was 91 and had been unwell for some time.

• Béteille was born and raised in West Bengal and later moved to Delhi after completing his MA from University of Calcutta.
• He taught for several decades at the Delhi School of Economics, where he later became Professor Emeritus.
• He also served as the first Chancellor of Ashoka University.
