Target set to Make India the Top Silk Producer by 2028–29

On September 20, 2026, during the 77th Foundation Day celebrations of the Central Silk Board (CSB) in Bengaluru, Union Minister for Textiles Giriraj Singh expressed the goal of elevating India to the top rank in global silk production by 2028–29. Currently, India is the world's second-largest silk producer after China.

Key Highlights

Production Target: India's silk production has increased from approximately 26,000 metric tonnes in 2014 to around 42,000 metric tonnes, with a target set for 60,000 metric tonnes by 2030–31.
Global Position: According to the latest available official data from the Ministry of Textiles, India is the second-largest silk producer in the world. The country's production stood at 41,121 metric tonnes in 2024–25.
Karnataka Leads: Karnataka ranks first in silk production in the country. According to official figures, the state produced 12,463 metric tonnes of raw silk in 2023–24, accounting for approximately 32% of national production.
Technological Adoption: Emphasis is being placed on using Artificial Intelligence (AI), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Machine Learning, and high-yielding silkworm hybrids to boost output and quality.
Farmer Incentives: A call was made to organize 'Best Silk Farmer' awards at the district, state, and national levels to foster healthy competition among sericulture farmers.
