21 June: World Hydrography Day

  • 23 Jun 2021

  • Observed annually on 21 June, the World Hydrography Day highlights the importance of hydrography and its relevance.
  • This day was observed and recognised because of the initiative of Monaco-based International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) that was founded in 1921.
  • This organisation serves the purpose of facilitating talks between governments on issues related to navigation, technical standards and protection of marine life.
  • The theme for the event this year is "100 years of International Cooperation in Hydrography".
  • Hydrography is the measuring and characterization of the physical features of oceans, seas, coastal regions, lakes, and rivers. Aside from that, it forecasts their change with time for the primary goal of navigation safety and to help all other maritime operations. It also contributes to economic development, defence and security, science and research, and nature conservation.
