Change in Flag Code of India: Can stay hoisted Day & Night

As the central government has launched ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign from August 13, the Ministry of Home Affairs has amended the Flag Code of India 2002 to allow for the national flag to be flown even at night. Earlier, the flag could be hoisted only between sunrise and sunset.


The Change: Clause XI of Paragraph 2.2 the Flag Code

  • Now: Clause XI of paragraph 2.2 of the Flag Code was replaced by the following clause: “where the flag is displayed in the open or displayed on the house of a member of the public, it may be flown day and night”.
  • Earlier: Clause XI earlier read, “where the flag is displayed in the open, it should, as far as possible, be flown from sunrise to sunset, irrespective of weather conditions”.

Other recent Changes to Flag Code

  • Last year, the government had amended the flag code to allow for machine-made and polyester flags to be used.
  • Towards this, the government replaced paragraph 1.2 of Part I of the flag code with the following: “The National Flag shall be made of hand-spun and hand-woven or machine-made, cotton/ polyester/ wool/ silk khadi bunting.”

Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign

  • ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ is a campaign under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav to encourage people to bring the Tiranga home and to hoist it to mark the 75th year of India’s independence.
  • The idea behind the initiative is to invoke the feeling of patriotism in the hearts of the people and to promote awareness about the Indian National Flag.
  • To mark this momentous occasion, people are being encouraged to hoist the flag in their homes from 13th to 15th August 2022. Apart from this, they can also ‘Pin a Flag’ virtually at https://harghartiranga.com, along with posting a ‘Selfie with Flag’ on the site.

Some other Facts on Indian National Flag

  • Pingali Venkayya is the designer of the current National Flag of India.
  • In 1947, the "Charkha" in the National Flag was replaced with the Ashoka Chakra taken from Sarnath Pillar.
  • The Indian National Flag was adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India on July 22, 1947.
