First Monthly Bulletin of Revamped PLFS for April 2025

On 15th May 2025, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released the inaugural Monthly Bulletin of the revamped Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) for April 2025, featuring employment indicators across rural and urban India.

Key Points

  • LFPR Insights: Labour Force Participation Rate stood at 55.6% overall—58.0% in rural and 50.7% in urban areas. Male LFPR was significantly higher than female LFPR.
  • WPR Data: Worker Population Ratio was 52.8% nationwide; rural WPR was 55.4%, urban WPR 47.4%. Female WPR was 36.8% in rural and 23.5% in urban areas.
  • Unemployment Rate: National unemployment rate stood at 5.1% in April 2025—5.2% for males and 5.0% for females.
  • Revamped Survey Method: New rotational panel design launched in January 2025 with households visited 4 times over 4 months, ensuring 75% overlap in sampling units.
  • Expanded Coverage: Survey covered 89,434 households and 3.8 lakh individuals from both rural and urban India.
  • Improved Estimates: PLFS revamp extends quarterly employment data collection to rural areas and increases surveyed households per unit from 8 to 12.
