Advanced Membrane for Seawater Desalination
- 16 May 2025
On 15th May 2025, the DRDO developed a high-pressure nanoporous polymeric membrane tailored for desalination under harsh marine conditions. Developed by DMSRDE, Kanpur, the tech is designed for Indian Coast Guard use.
Key Points
- Developed by DMSRDE: The Defence Materials Stores and Research & Development Establishment completed development in just eight months.
- Chloride Resistance: Engineered to resist degradation from chloride ions present in saline water.
- ICG Application: Specifically created to meet desalination requirements on Indian Coast Guard Offshore Patrolling Vessels (OPVs).
- Successful Trials: Initial technical trials on an OPV were successful; final clearance awaits 500 hours of testing.
- Civilian Use Potential: With minor tweaks, the technology could be adapted for coastal civilian desalination systems.
