Launch of Bio-based Plastics under Bio-E3

On September 24, 2026, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh formally launched the commercial use of Polylactic Acid (PLA)-based biodegradable bio-plastics.
Key Facts
- Bio-E3 Initiative: The project is being carried forward by Balrampur Chini Mills under the Bio-E3 framework. Bio-E3 stands for Biotechnology for Economy, Environment, and Employment.
- Rs. 75 Crore Grant: BIRAC has provided a grant of Rs. 75 crore for the PLA and co-polymer research facility, which will have a capacity of 100 tonnes per annum.
- Facility in Kumbhi: The pilot research facility will be set up at the integrated manufacturing complex of Balrampur Chini Mills in Kumbhi, Uttar Pradesh.
- Polylactic Acid: PLA is a bio-based polymer that can be produced from renewable biological sources like sugar. It is used in manufacturing bio-plastics and sustainable materials.
