- Wild buffaloes are now restricted to scattered populations in India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar.
- In India it is mostly found in Kaziranga National Park, as per the last count in 430 sq.km.Kaziranga put the number of wild buffaloes at around 1400.
- It has been listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List.
