Features of the Non-Cooperation Movement

The movement was essentially a peaceful and non-violent protest against the British government in India.
Indians were asked to relinquish their titles and resign from nominated seats in the local bodies as a mark of protest.
People were asked to resign from their government jobs.
People were asked to withdraw their children from government-controlled or aided schools and colleges.
People were asked to boycott foreign goods and use only Indian-made goods.
People were asked to boycott the elections to the legislative councils.
People were asked not to serve in the British army.
It was also planned that if the above steps did not bring results, people would refuse to pay their taxes.
The INC also demanded Swarajya or self-government.
Only completely non-violent means would be employed to get the demands fulfilled.

Why was the Non-Cooperation Movement suspended?

Gandhiji called off the movement in February 1922 in the wake of the Chauri Chaura incident.
In Chauri Chaura, Uttar Pradesh, a violent mob set fire to a police station killing 22 policemen during a clash between the police and protesters of the movement.
Gandhiji called off the movement saying people were not ready for revolt against the government through ahimsa.
Several leaders like Motilal Nehru and C R Das were against the suspension of the movement only due to sporadic incidents of violence.

The Malabar Rebellion, also known as the MoplahRebellion, was an armed revolt staged by the Mappila Muslims of Kerala in 1921.
The most prominent leaders of the rebellion were VariankunnathKunjahammad Haji, SithiKoyaThangal and Ali Musliyar.
Three different political movements merged to trigger the rebellion —one, the tenancy movement, was rooted in local agrarian grievances (particularly in south Malabar); the other two were the Khilafat (Caliphate) movement and the Non-Cooperation movement, launched jointly by the All-India Khilafat Committee and the Indian National Congress.
In August 1920, Gandhi along with Shaukat Ali (the leader of the KhilafatMovement in India) visited Calicut to spread the combined message of non-cooperation and Khilafat among the residents of Malabar.
In response to Gandhi’s call, a Khilafat committee was formed in Malabar and the Mappilas, under their religious head MahadumTangal of Ponnani pledged support to the Non-cooperation Movement.
The Moplah tenants agitated against the Hindu landlords (locally referred to as Janmi) and the British government.
Most of their grievances were related to the security of tenure, high rents, renewal fees and other unfair exactions of the landlords.
The British government responded with much aggression, bringing in Gurkha regiments to suppress it and imposing martial law.
Wagon Tragedy: A noteworthy event of the British suppression was the wagon tragedy when approximately 60 Mappila prisoners on their way to prison, were suffocated to death in a closed railway goods wagon.

Bal Gangadhar Tilak (23 July 1856 – 1 August 1920), born as Keshav Gangadhar Tilak, was an Indian nationalist, teacher, and an independence activist.
He was one of the Lal-Bal-Pal triumvirate.

He was one of the first advocates of Swaraj or self-rule.
He started two weeklies, ‘Kesari’ (The Lion) in Marathi and ‘Mahratta’ in English in 1880–81 with Gopal Ganesh Agarkar as the first editor.
Both the newspapers actively propagated the cause of national freedom and stressed on making Indians aware to be self-reliant.
Tilak helped found the All India Home Rule League in 1916–18, with G. S. Khaparde and Annie Besant. He started his Home Rule League in Maharashtra, Central Provinces, and Karnataka and Berar region.
In 1903, Tilak wrote the book "The Arctic Home in the Vedas". In it, he argued that the Vedas could only have been composed in the Arctics, and the Aryan bards brought them south after the onset of the last ice age.
Later, he wrote "Shrimadh Bhagvad Gita Rahasya" in prison at Mandalay – the analysis of 'Karma Yoga' in the Bhagavad Gita, which is known to be a gift of the Vedas and the Upanishads.
